Seniors are invited to participate in a program that will help to maintain their health and independence — the Matter of Balance Program. Many seniors lose their health, mobility, and independence due to falls that are preventable. This program teaches seniors how to maintain their balance, prevent falls, and improve their health and security. It is now being offered at the Portuguese Community Center every Wednesday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Please come by and speak with Rita Fontes and our volunteer nurse, Sue Avina, for more information and to enroll in this important and informative series of workshops.
Thousands of festival-goers enjoyed perfect weather at History San José on July 9. Many patronized POSSO’s food and crochet booths. POSSO thanks all of the volunteers, POSSO board members, and staff volunteers and their families for their hard work and dedication in preparing the delicious food and creating the crochet handcrafts for sale. Special thanks to the cooks: Américo Fontes, José Freitas, José Soares, Manuel Sousa, and Arnold Rodrigues, who also coordinated POSSO’s participation in the festival.
Join the annual Portuguese Historical Museum Dia de Portugal Festival on Saturday, June 9, at History Park at the south end of Kelley Park in San José. Admission is free. Come enjoy our delicious pork loin sandwiches (bifanas), bacalhau (codfish) casserole, fava beans, and arroz doce (sweet rice pudding). Visit the Crochet Club booth — the perfect place to find the most unique and lovely gifts made by members of POSSO’s Crochet Club.

POSSO’s annual radiothon on KSQQ 96.1 fm will take place on Saturday, May 5, from noon to 4 p.m. Please tune in and help POSSO in any way you can. Government non-profit social services funding reductions mean that POSSO depends on your generosity to continue providing social services to the most-vulnerable among us.
Effective July 1, POSSO will be losing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds from the City of San José due to the city’s financial crisis. POSSO would like to thank Batista and Dolores Vieira for again generously offering KSQQ for POSSO’s annual radiothon.
