Our sincere thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Batista and Dolores Vieira for again hosting the POSSO KSQQ Radiothon on May 4. This successful event raised funds to help continue POSSO’s services and also reminded listeners about all that POSSO provides the community. Thanks also to all who participated and to all who responded with their donations for this annual appeal. If you have not yet mailed your donation, please do so at your earliest convenience. Your support is urgently needed and greatly appreciated.
POSSO celebrated its 37th anniversary on April 6 at the I.E.S. Hall in San José. We would like to profoundly and sincerely thank everyone who helped make this event a reality and everyone who attended this community celebration. Special thanks to the President and Board of Directors of the I.E.S. Hall for donating the use of the hall.
Special thanks also to Radio Station KSQQ and the Portuguese Tribune; to chefs Oriolando Bettencor, Albertino Bettencourt and Carlos Fagundes. And our heartfelt thanks to an up-and-coming talent, Joey Medeiros, who dazzled us with his musical gift. Thanks also to John and Connie Goulart for offering the delicious dessert; and to the volunteer servers from the Mt. Pleasant High School Portuguese Club, St. John Vianney School, and San José State University.
The evening was graced by comments and commendations from the Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco, Dr. Nuno Vaultier Mathias, Santa Clara County Supervisors Ken Yeager and Dave Cortese, and San Jose City Council Members Sam Liccardo and Xavier Campos.
POSSO thanks Dr. Paulo Teves, the Regional Government of the Azores Director for Communities Abroad, for his visit on March 24. POSSO is grateful for the continued support of the Regional Government of the Azores.
For 37 years, POSSO, with the support of the community that it serves, has made a difference in the lives of thousands of our community members, particularly our seniors. Please join us for POSSO’s 37th Anniversary Celebration on April 6, 2013. It will be a wonderful evening of great food and entertainment. This is an important opportunity to support POSSO’s continued services, as this is POSSO’s annual major fundraising event.
Dinner will be prepared by Albertino Bettencourt, Agostinho Bettencourt, Oriolando Bettencor, and Luis Dinis. Dessert is offered once again with the generous support of John and Connie Goulart.
Joey Medeiros is a young member of our community with great talent and a passion for music, both traditional and contemporary. He is graciously donating his performance to make our 37th Anniversary Celebration truly special.

It’s never too late to say “Thank You”, and POSSO wholeheartedly thanks you for your generosity and good will in celebrating the holidays with a full house on December 15. Special thanks to Emily, who once again donated an afternoon of her special talent. Thanks go out to the members of the Mt. Pleasant High School Portuguese Club who helped serve, to the members of POSSO’s Crochet Group who donated the sales of their beautiful handcrafts to POSSO, and to our organizations and friends who visited and played traditional Portuguese Christmas music for our guests.
POSSO needs your help. Early in 2012, our parking lot canopy that provided protection from the sun and rain for our volunteers, clients and staff for the Brown Bag and Food Commodities Programs was destroyed by strong winds. For most of t he year, we used tarps and hats against the elements. Late in the year, a generous benefactor paid for the materials to construct a permanent covering. The labor was provided by volunteers.
After constructing a basic covering with side walls, street people began using the protection of the covering to do some very bad things. So we felt it necessary to gate the covering against these illicit acts. We need your help to help defray the cost of this unforeseen expense so that we won’t need to use funds that are better spent on delivering services to our community.
If you can help, please send your donation to:

Please add “For Gates” to the memo line of your check so that we may apply your donation appropriately.
Beginning the first week of January, POSSO will begin serving lunch on Fridays. If there is enough participation, this fifth day of service each week will likely continue. It will be important to demonstrate with your presence on Fridays that you value this additional day of service. POSSO will rely on an increased County subsidy and on the generosity of our Portuguese community for this lunch program that not only provides a nutritious lunch to our seniors, but also provides them with an opportunity to gather in a social environment for their physical, mental and emotional health.
Thanks to all who participated in and contributed to the great success of POSSO’s Thanksgiving Dinner with their hard work and donations. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Avelar, Evangelina Mancebo, and Mrs. Filomena Wilson, as well as to the members of the Mt. Pleasant High School Portuguese Club and the students from San José State University who helped serve the luncheon.
Please save the afternoon of December 15 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. to celebrate the holidays with your friends at POSSO. Our annual Christmas auction is one of our major fundraisers, so your generous participation is needed now more than ever. Budget cuts have hit POSSO and other agencies like it particularly hard. You can make a difference in the daily lives of many members of our community.
Join us for lots of fun, refreshments, musical entertainment by Emily, and a visit from Santa.
Join us for our annual Thanksgiving luncheon on Saturday, November 17, at 2:00 p.m. at POSSO. As always, volunteers will deliver meals to the home-bound. Please make your reservations for home delivery by November 8.
