POSSO celebrated its 36th anniversary on March 31 among many of its benefactors and friends. POSSO would like to thank everyone who helped plan, prepare and execute this wonderful event. Special thanks to the president and directors of the I.E.S. Hall for the use of their facilities. Thanks to Batista and Dolores Vieira and Radio Station KSQQ for publicity, to emcee Davide Vieira and to Tony Silveira for the evening’s benediction. To chefs Oriolando Betencor, Albertino Bettencourt, Luis Dinis, and Carlos Fagundes, our heartfelt appreciation for preparing another delicious banquet. To the directors of the Portuguese Band of San José for preparing mouth-watering crème brûlée for dessert. To Jeneva Westendorf and the Portuguese Club of Mt. Pleasant High School and to the students from San José State University for serving dinner. Thanks to the Portuguese Tribune for sharing news and photos from our event with the community-at-large. And special thanks for their generous contributions go to João and Connie Goulart, Councilmember Sam Liccardo, and candidate for San José Unified School District Trustee, Paul Murphy.
Congratulations to the recipients of POSSO’s annual awards! POSSO sincerely appreciates their hard work and support!

POSSO’s annual radiothon on KSQQ 96.1 fm will take place on Saturday, May 5, from noon to 4 p.m. Please tune in and help POSSO in any way you can. Government non-profit social services funding reductions mean that POSSO depends on your generosity to continue providing social services to the most-vulnerable among us.
Effective July 1, POSSO will be losing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds from the City of San José due to the city’s financial crisis. CDBG funds have helped support POSSO services since 1982. POSSO’s services depend increasingly on the generosity of our community. Please call KSQQ at 408.258.9696 or POSSO at 408.293.0877 between noon and 4 p.m. on May 5 to make a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable seniors.
POSSO would like to thank Batista and Dolores Vieira for again generously offering KSQQ for POSSO’s annual radiothon.
POSSO has an office space for lease on the second floor of the Portuguese Community Center. Please contact POSSO for more information and to see the available space.
Congratulations to the participants who graduated on February 29 from POSSO’s first Matter of Balance program. And congratulations to POSSO’s Case Manager Rita Fontes and volunteer nurse Sue Avina for bringing this nationally-recognized program to the Portuguese Community Center. Matter of Balance teaches seniors how to maintain their balance, prevent falls, and improve their health and security. Many seniors lose their mobility due to falls that are preventable. This series of workshops will be offered again in the coming months for new participants. Please contact POSSO for more information and to enroll in the next series. This program is provided in part with support from the Health Trust.
Come and celebrate 36 years of community service with POSSO on Saturday, March 31 at the I.E.S. Hall in San José! The festivities begin with no-host social hour at 6:00 p.m., followed by a delicious meal of prime rib with all the fixings, wine and dessert.
Entertainment will feature Zé Duarte, the popular Azorean artist from San Diego. Come and join us for a wonderful evening celebrating the transformative difference that POSSO and its supporters make in the lives of thousands of people.
Your donation is $50 per person and will support POSSO’s continued services. Please contact POSSO at 408.293.0877 for information and reservations before March 22.
POSSO’s sincere thanks to Clube 60 and all of the volunteers who made and sold filhós on February 18. Thanks to all who donated ingredients and purchased the filhós as well. Your contributions made this another successful fundraiser!
Fundraising activities take a tremendous amount of work, but are extremely important in generating funds for POSSO’s day-to-day operating expenses. Their success depends upon the volunteers who generously offer their time and talents to carry them out, as in the example of POSSO’s cook, Manuela Pires and her spouse, Jorge. This couple donated the preparation of the dinner for POSSO’s January 28 fundraising dinner. POSSO is deeply grateful for all of the generous help and contributions that make our many fundraisers successful throughout the year!
Are you paying for services that you don’t need? POSSO will assist you by verifying your correct billing. Please call POSSO at 408.293.0877 to make an appointment to check if your phone bill has any errors and if you are owed a refund.
POSSO is offering a new series of workshops that teach how to maintain your balance, prevent falls, and improve your health. Many seniors lose their mobility due to falls that are preventable. Please contact POSSO for more information and to enroll in this program provided with support from The Health Trust.
Our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the success of our fundraising dinner-dance on Saturday, January 28 at the Portuguese Athletic Club. Volunteer chefs Jorge and Manuela Pires prepared a delicious dinner of alcatra. Alcides, Rosa Maria, and Emily graced the evening with their artistry. And the PAC donated their beautiful facilities and china.
The funds raised by this event will be used to pay for day-to-day operating expenses like utilities, insurance, telephone and office supplies. Given that POSSO’s government grants only cover staff salaries, we must depend on your generosity to cover all other expenses.
See photos of the dinner-dance in POSSO’s Facebook album.
