Health services

POSSO believes that all members of the community are entitled to a productive, secure, and rewarding life, and that good health is an essential component. Among the seniors, the promotion and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle has proven to be the most urgent concern. Toward this end, POSSO provides, through a public health nurse and medical professionals, health education, blood pressure screening, eye exams, and other medical screening, consultation, and referral.

Blood Pressure and Medical Screening

The blood pressure and medical screening provided by a public health nurse is one of our most-utilized programs. Participants agree that this program is vital to the maintenance and restoration of their health, and in ensuring timely treatment of potentially-serious health problems.

Health Workshops

Health and nutrition workshops are sponsored throughout the year with the collaboration of health organizations and professionals.

Wellness Program

With the support of a grant from the City of San Jose’s Healthy Neighborhood Venture Fund, POSSO initiated a senior wellness program in January 2002. This preventive health program helps seniors maintain their optimum level of health and independence by providing health education and consultation with the tri-lingual social worker who coordinates the program and with a registered nurse. The seniors are provided with flu vaccinations and screening exams for disease conditions that commonly affect the elderly. More than 400 seniors each year receive bone density, cholesterol, glaucoma, diabetes and other screening exams. Early detection of high risk or disease symptoms in seniors has enabled them to receive timely medical treatment and appropriate self-care in order to restore and maintain their optimum level of health.
